Who Needs Me Today?

The stake presidents and the Kenya Nairobi Mission President have asked all ward and branch members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help donate to the Solai Dam disaster victims in Kenya. President Ndivo asked the members of the Church, “to contribute whatever they have, not limited to blankets, mattresses, dried food stuffs, dried milk, etc.”

Relief Society at the Zimmerman Ward of the Church discussed in meeting May 13, 2018 the topic, “Who Needs Me Today?” This discussion was appropriate as they have neighbors in the next county of Nakuru who are in need. The Solai Dam breach flooded many families out of their homes and left a trail of death and destruction on May 9th.

The Relief Society women discussed that the neighbors in the flooded area need them to take care of families and Heavenly Father needs them as they are his hands and feet. The women decided that they can help relieve the suffering in the village of Solai by giving food from their own stock, clothing, and perhaps dig from their pockets as well. 

Donations will be on-going as the need is accessed and all contributions will be picked up by members wearing the trademark yellow Mormon Helping Hands shirts and delivered to the local Red Cross unit. This project is sponsored within each unit, branch and ward. Mormon Helping Hands program provides priesthood leaders giving an opportunity for Church members to serve those in need, as well as establish the name and reputation of the Church.

Mormon Helping Hands volunteers also partners with government and nonprofit organizations to support and improve the communities where they live. The Helping Hands program reflects the desire of Mormons to follow the example of Jesus Christ by serving others. The effort receives resources from Church humanitarian services and the projects are coordinated by local Church leaders.
