School in Need of a New Kitchen

Humanitarian work in Mombasa area provided new upgrades for a school along with classroom supplies.

The St. Michaels Primary school severely needed some repairs and on top of the wish-list was a new kitchen. Also, books, sports equipment and new floors in various classrooms and an office were wished for. The Humanitarian/Charites, senior couple missionary, Elder and Sister Jensen, representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took notice. The old cooking hut needed upgrading.

Just 17 km south of Mombasa in the little village of Tiwi, and not far from the white sandy beach, is the St. Michaels Primary School built in 2005. Though the area was predominantly Muslim, land was donated for a Christian based school. With the help of the parents, the school was completed and enrollment continued to grow. Soon the school was full of hundreds of students.

After a decade or so, the school gravely needed upgrading. The Missionary couple engaged a contractor, George Naichu, who drew up the plans and submitted his bid. It didn’t take long before the little free-standing kitchen was completed and construction of two walls between the buildings formed an office. Parents and the community derived their portion of funds to help with the project and the school was soon revamped. The school children and educators were pleased—so much so, that they didn’t want to use the kitchen, keeping it pristine, for the first couple of weeks.

The missionaries then took the book-list and ordered hundreds of books for the classrooms.

"The contractor did an outstanding job—painting the buildings and reinforcing other walls with better foundations.  The work was beyond the scope of his contract,” said Elder Jensen. We were pleased with his work.”
