Members of the Riruta ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in a Mormon Helping Hands activity November 2017, in Kawangware Slums. The saints donated and took to the Gatina Center 100 kg of beans, 104.5 kg or rice, 10 bales of maize meal flour and 5kg of sugar. The 27 members of the Mormon Helping Hands project also scrubbed and cleaned the dining hall where the grannies eat their meals.

According to Jane Ngatia, a member of the Riruta Ward, the Gatina Centre is run by the Lavington United Church and they prepare a meal and feed their “grannies”—women 65 years and older, and a few elderly men as well, every Wednesday of the week. The “grannies” enjoy a lunch and friendship of others and sing praises to God for their good fortune. On average about 100 grannies come for lunch and socializing each week to fill their physical and social needs. They listen to the pastor preach the word of God and then take away foodstuffs to sustain them for a week.
