Mormon Helping Hands Clean-up Changamwe

Members from three branches of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wearing their trademark yellow shirts provided volunteer community service.

On July 7, 2018, Members from three congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wearing their trademark yellow shirts for Mormon Helping Hands provided volunteer community service. These volunteers invited friends and families to assemble early in the morning to be transported to the venue by matatus, for the purpose of cleaning the debris and trash along the roadside. Their goal was to clean a section of the community, making a cleaner and more environmentally presentable neighborhood—one small locality at a time.

In the area of Changamwe, a suburb of Mombasa, Kenya,

Members organized the event under the direction of Jack Oricho, Mombasa District Public Affairs and Mormon Helping Hands Specialist, with Ann Okinda, public affairs media person who captured photos of the clean-up and caught remarks of appreciation from residents in the area.

Unsightly trash piles on the street where some members of the Church meet, initiated the cleanup of the eyesore of non-degradable materials—plastic, tin and glass, also organic garbage that is associated with health risks and contaminating water.

More than 50 volunteers worked with shovels, loading wheel barrows and carrying thousands of pieces of accumulated litter, to a designated dump. Juice and bread were shared and welcomed for refreshment.
