Introducing the Church with Streetboarding

Sister Mkhize and Sister Sehlako, missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had a bright idea and carried it through. They set up a table at Hardy Post Mall and offered free literature to anyone who was interested. Their mission was to get the Church known in Karen, a lovely area where homes are gated, and it is next to impossible to meet people there. On July 7th four missionary areas—Langata, Rongai, Ngong and Nakuru, combining both Elders and sister missionaries to accomplish their goal at Hardy Post.

“We chose Hardy Post because it is where many residents instead of tourists visit. It proved to be a better way of getting to know people than walking empty roads with locked gates,” said Sister Mkhize. We found most people were interested in the My Family booklet, a common interest, no matter what their belief.”

The sisters said they fasted and prayed about this activity and felt the Lord’s hand in it. At first just the two of them had decided to try streetboarding alone, as something small, since previous missionaries had not spent much time in Karen proselyting. Once the location was secured the sister missionaries turned to the Church’s public affairs people to assist, as Hardy Post wanted compensation for the use of the spot. Public Affairs would assist and loan out pull-up banners that they could display as their introduction board.

“First, as we arrived at the Post, we made sure that we had secured the location and though we talked to a different manager, he said we didn’t even need to pay if we were giving out free material. We recognized that this, again was the Lord extending His tender mercies. As we prepared the necessary materials we were prompted to enthuse the whole district to share the gospel in Karen."

“The day came, and the event was a success. We weren’t expecting large crowds, but just to meet and tell people to get used to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and then arouse their interest how our Church can change their lives.”

Missionary Streetboarding, not to be confused with the fun riding experience, created with fusing skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing, invented in South Africa in 1989. Missionaries around the globe at various times have used boards or signages to get the attention of people on the street.
